How Medical Records Can Affect Your Life Settlement Offer
By Saul L. Appel, CLU®, ChFC®
Medical records are a central part of many life settlement evaluations. Buyers use them to assess the insured’s health and estimate life expectancy, which can significantly affect whether an offer is made and how much a buyer may pay.
A serious diagnosis does not automatically produce a high offer, and a relatively healthy insured does not automatically disqualify a policy. Buyers consider the full medical picture: diagnoses, treatments, medications, hospitalizations, functional ability, recent test results, and whether conditions are stable or progressing.
Complete and current records are important. Missing specialist reports or outdated information can lead to delays, conservative assumptions, or a declined case. The insured should identify primary physicians, specialists, hospitals, and other providers who hold relevant records.
Medical information should never be obtained casually. The insured signs written authorizations permitting specific records to be requested and reviewed. Reputable professionals protect that information and share it only as needed for the transaction.
Buyers combine the medical analysis with policy economics. Even when health supports a shorter life expectancy, extremely high future premiums can reduce value. The best evaluation therefore reviews health and policy performance together.
There is no charge or obligation to begin with a preliminary assessment of the insured’s general health and the policy details.
